Knee Pain

Condition

Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common issue that affects people of all ages and can significantly impact daily life, as we rely on our legs for walking and mobility. Whether caused by a sudden injury, chronic conditions like arthritis, or persistent discomfort that builds over time, knee pain can make even simple movements—like bending or climbing stairs—challenging. Understanding the causes of knee pain and exploring effective treatment options, such as physiotherapy and specialized knee pain relief exercises, can help you regain mobility and reduce discomfort.

Reasons

Some common reasons for knee pain include:

This is a common cause of knee pain, especially as we age. It happens when the protective cartilage in your knee wears down over time, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Physiotherapy is targeted at improving the loading through the knee and strengthening weak muscles.

Overuse or unfamiliar strain on the knee — often from sports or activities like running or jumping—can lead to patella tendinopathy. Physiotherapy is aimed at finding out the cause and redressing any imbalances, by releasing tight structures and strengthening weak ones.

The meniscus is a cushion between the bones in your knee. Twisting or turning quickly, especially when putting weight on the knee, can irritate or tear this cartilage. Don’t worry though! This can often be managed very successfully without surgery.

Tearing your ACL can feel very overwhelming but we are here to guide you through a pre-operative programme, post operative rehabilitation or maybe you are even going to try conservative management. Some of our team have had their ACLs reconstructed too.

These ligaments can be strained or torn through sporting trauma. Rehabilitation is focussed on your sporting goals to minimise time out of the things you love.

The knee cap sits in a groove of your knee and can be a source of pain. This can occur when there is tightness around your knee or abnormal biomechanics. Physiotherapy is targeted at addressing this.

The fascia band which runs from your hip to your knee can become very painful if it rubs on structures around your knee. This is a common running injury. Abnormal biomechanics around the hip and knee are often at fault and physiotherapy is aimed at improving this.
