In SPEAR clinics, we are seeing an increasing number of teenagers with postural issues and as parents and physiotherapists, we know it is an uphill battle to make an active lifestyle more appealing than the draws of YouTube and the ipad. As a clinic we are interested in helping our patients; and with injury prevention and promoting an active lifestyle high on our agenda we thought we would put together some ideas of free active outdoor things to do with children over the holidays.
SPEAR owner and physiotherapist, Karen tells us more in our latest blog.
“Mum…..Can I get the ipad”.
“No”, I hear myself reply for the 10th time that morning. Oh my word and it is only day 2 of the summer holidays! The holidays can be an expensive time in terms of doing activities with the children, but it is also important to me to keep my girls as active as possible in the holidays.
Whilst like most parents I limit the time they are on their devices, the amount of time children spend sitting these days in comparison to my generation or my parents generation is scary.
When I was younger I was never inside whereas now I feel I have an uphill struggle making the outdoors more appealing than the indoors.
It is not just posture and our backs that suffer with the new “inside generation” it is our vitamin D levels and childhood obesity too. It was on the news this week that obesity now causes more cases of four common cancers than smoking!
As a clinic we are interested in helping our patients; and with injury prevention and promoting an active lifestyle high on our agenda we put together some ideas of free active outdoor things to do with children over the holidays that we will share on our blog and on our social media pages – including some summer adventures of the SPEAR team!
Local charity Kayleigh’s Wee Stars have also put together a summer challenge sheet that you can find on here for a £3 donation or via their Facebook page.
This allows you to plot your children’s summer adventures and all completed sheets receive a wee prize. Enjoy your summer! #teamSPEAR
